Essays on American History |
La Amistad
... the summer of 1839, on a stormy night off the coast of Cuba, 53 Africans held captive in the cramped cargo holds of the Spanish slave ship break free of their shackles. Led by Cinque (played by Djimon Hounsou), they arm themselves, take control of the ship and reclaim their freedom. They have one goal: to return to Africa.
Without the navigational skills to guide them home, the Africans are forced to rely on the two surviving members of the crew. But they are tricked. After two months on a ragged course up the eastern seaboard, an American naval ship off the coast of Connecticut captures the Amistad and the Africans were charged with murder and piracy.

The Battle Of Antietam
... were present
during the battle 12,000 were lost.
Many times in this battle it seemed as if a Northern victory were
certain and there were no Confederate reserves remaining to oppose their
advance. Too much time had been wasted and the last Confederate division,
that had been left at Harper’s Ferry to supervise the surrender of the
garrison, was approching the battlefield. They came upon the flank of the
Union forces and drove them back.
At the end Confederate generals urged Robert E. Lee to retreat, but
he refused. At dawn, on the 18th, the army was still there inviting
attack. Although more then 10,000 additional Union troops reached the
battlefield McClella ...

Why Art Is Important To Religion
... Today society is looking for peace and an anchor to hold onto. This religious art lifts the spirit and brings peace within through a beautiful way. It helps reassure people that there is a life after this one. One needs not fear the power of God but to understand his actions and the way one should live his or her life.
Art through the ages has been a powerful voice for both secular and religious ideas, and the treasury of Christian art should not be relegated to museum viewing. The art should be displayed in the church were it is meant to be. Its richness can be brought to people in schools and adult study groups. This, in turn, can help to bring art up to the level ...

Pythagorean Philosophy And Its Influence On Musical Instrume
... one day the young Pythagoras was passing a
blacksmith's shop and his ear was caught by the regular
intervals of sounds from the anvil. When he discovered that the
hammers were of different weights, it occured to him that the
intervals might be related to those weights. Pythagoras was
correct. Pythagorean philosophy maintained that all things are
numbers. Based on the belief that numbers were the building
blocks of everything, Pythagoras began linking numbers and music.
Revolutionizing music, Pythagoras' findings generated theorems
and standards for musical scales, relationships, instruments, and
creative formation. Musical scales became defined, and ...

Existentialism In Film
... who were hard drinkers and fast livers. They smoldered with a barely sublimated intense sexual tension. The French critics of the day were the first to hail the new style, which they called "film noir".
Before I proceed, let me be quite clear as to how film noir might qualify as a genre worthy of our consideration in connection with existentialist film. As I said, I do not necessarily assert that the film noir genre is a direct result of the popularity of existentialist philosophy in America. Film noir does, however, represent some of the first serious confrontation with truly dark subject matter, much of which was provoked more by film makers' insight into the c ...

Demystifying The A-Team Formula
... of the network's
biggest successes ever."1
Yet, what secret formula did Stephen J. Cannell (Executive Producer and the man who
started the show going) tap into to get the audience to bite? Why was everyone so turned
on to, and tuned in to The A-Team in its first few seasons? Were the Am erican audience
that thrilled hearing B.A. Baracus (Mr. T) say "Shut up fool!"; were they that interested
in seeing if Hannibal's (George Peppard) plan always comes together, or was it truly
the violence that sold the show?
Compared to NBC's new experimental shows like Hill Street Blues, and St. Elsewhere, whose
innovative use of realism sparked the Third Golde ...

Emerging Trends - Body Wearable Computers
... devices that are not programmable, the wearable computer is as re-configurable as the family desktop or corporate mainframe computer. This is what sets the wearable computer apart from other wearable devices such as wristwatches, regular eyeglasses, and wearable radios.
The best definitions probably given to date are those of Steve Mann. Steve Mann is a self-appointed, and none opposed leader in the body wearable computer field. To avoid confusion and changing the meanings of Steve’s definitions I included them in their entirety from Steve Mann’s Keynote Address, 1998.
“Constancy, the computer runs continuously, and is “always ready” ...

Cassablanca
... performances by a top cast, a flawless script story line
and director, and superb production techniques. In addition, it
blends a raging love story with tormenting schemes which makes
it one of ! the best Hollywood movies of all time. Casablanca
was never expected to be a large scale movie. The script was written
on a day to day basis even till the last few moments of the movie but
despite all that, it made it bigger than any other movie in it's time.
The movie took place in 1942 and was based around world war II
which in reality was taking place as they filmed. It was
because of the war that Rick and Ilsa were separated, and this
was an idea that ...

Statue Of Liberty
... have been built to represent a great moment but the was build to symbolize a great idea and country. At that time in history people were flocking to America because they were either being persecuted in their home countries or they were just disappointed at the status of their lives and wanted to come to “the land of opportunity” to start a new life.
This is a great symbol of art because The is magnificent in every way, and serves its purpose to a superb level. Like I mentioned previously, “location, location, location .. “ the statue’s location was perfect back in the days of Ellis Island and is perfect now as a tourist site. Shortly after the immigran ...

The Puritans And The Salem Witch Trials
... English colonists to Massachusetts Bay.
"The Church of England had been established a century before John Winthrop and the other colonists arrived at Massachusetts Bay. In 1531, King Henry VIII had the English Parliament declare that the king, not the Pope, was the head of the church in England."1 With that statement, the religious movement called "The Reformation" began to spread across northern Europe. The Reformation led to the formation of a religious group called Protestants. In the decade that followed, many other reforms took place in the Church of England. The Puritans, who had originally been part of the Church of England, greatly encouraged the refo ...
