Using The Student Study Sheets In The Classroom
... Freedom: An Expression of the American Mind
This study sheet focuses on the pivotal event of Jefferson's early years in public life, his authorship of The Declaration of Independence. The sheet calls attention to Jefferson's writing style as the most distinctive feature of the Declaration, which for the most part, as Jefferson acknowledged, restated ideas that were commonplace at the time.
A comparison between the most memorable passage of Jefferson's document and a parallel passage from George Mason's nearly simultaneous "Declaration of Rights" should help students appreciate that Jefferson was but one voice in a chorus reciting the reasons for self-government ...

Chopin's "The Storm": Summary
... the story.
At the beginning of the story Bobinot and his young son, Bibi
decide to wait out a rapidly approaching storm at the store. Bobinot's
wife, Calixta, is home alone, tending to the household chores. Calixta's
is not aware of the storm approaching, although she is married and has a
child, she is unaware of the sexuality and passion within her.
As Calixta is gathering up the laundry, Alcee Laballiere enters the
yard, seeking shelter from the coming storm. My first impression of Alcee
is that he is pretty well off in the world. Although I see Bobinot as a
simple man. There is a mutual attraction between Calixta and Alcee, and
this attraction is not new ...

Kate Chopin, The Awakening
... my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn't give myself." (pg.47) Her unwillingness to sacrifice herself for her children and her husband demonstrates that she does not want to give herself away in order to make others happy. Edna can give her children superficial items, yet because of her new found "awakening" she can no longer truly serve to provide for their happiness. The only point that she makes clear in that statement is that she would give her life for her children, showing that she loves them but cannot define herself based on creating their happiness. Her actions resemble those of a child. Her awakening evolves into a selfish agenda, con ...

Looking For Alibrandi
... her life by, partly due to the scandal of her illegitimacy. These are some of the troubles facing Josephine Alibrandi, the main character of, and narrator in, the novel by Melina Marchetta.
Josephine’s perspective on life and her attitude towards the influences in her life changes throughout the novel. Initially she is confused about her nationality, her social standing and, probably like any other teenage girl, she is unsure of her attractiveness. However, by the end of the novel she has realised who she is and is proud of it.
“If someone comes up and asks what nationality I am, I’ll look at them and say that I’m Australian with Italian blood flowing rapidly thr ...

Antigone 8
... each character throughout both of the plays. He also changes the opening scenes of the play to show the way the play will be laid out.
During the whole play of "Antigone" the key theme is individual conscience versus the state whereas in "Oedipus Rex" it is the undying search for truth and discovery of self. "Antigone" Sophocles depicts a political, conscience led woman who is in an unending struggle over right and wrong with her uncle, Creon, the King. All throughout "Oedipus Rex" Sophocles shows a powerful and righteous King who is on a determined search to find the truth and himself. The difference in key themes during these plays are significant. Sophocles ...

The Analysis Of Several Works Of Joyce Maynard: Life's Not Over Yet
... who once lifted a car off the ground.” The
grandmother was a symbol of strength and courage, the narrator recalled her
grandmother always saying she was about to die, she did not think it would
actually ever happen. The narrator wanted to empress her grandmother by
bringing her own daughter and dressed her up, this went to show that she
really cared allot about what her grandmother thought about her.
I thought that the grandmother influenced the characters in a
positive way, because she made the people she influenced always want to do
the best in life, as the people seemed to really care about and want her
approval.

Patriarchy In 1001 Nights And A Midsummer Night’s Dream
... as well. Some common motifs associated with the patriarchal system in the fairy tales would be the male ruler of a kingdom, the ruler making blind promises, and those promises concerning his beautiful princess daughter. The daughter is almost never given a choice in the matter, but another common motif in fairy tales is when the princess conveniently falls in love with the man her father has chosen for her. In other stories, the supposedly patriarchal social structure in the land, is really held by a female; however, in most of these stories, the female wielding the power is usually using that social power for evil against the underdog daughter.

British Literature Women Of Lo
... even me to believe.
When faced with this assignment, I found myself in a slight panic. However, much to my surprise, it wasn’t all that bad.
In going over the choices, I knew I had to choose to write about women, and their roles in these tales. The fact that they were involved in sex, deceit, and adultery had nothing to do with my decision. And as Oscar Wilde said, “The world is packed with good and evil women. To know them is a middle class education.” I’m certainly a believer in that philosophy! After all, that’s why I’m in school.
In beginning to compare and contrast the role of women the The Wife of Bath’s Tale, by Ge ...

Writing For The Screen
... movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer, is a good example of a formulated 're-hash' of writing just redone.
Sometimes I feel the writers of these films just do it for the money, or the simple fame of achieving a blockbuster movie once again. We find this with the writer of The Faculty, which wrote I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequels. These are so formulated that it is easy for those that analyze and look at movies as a work of art and not just merely a “Saturday night date place.” These scriptwriters seem to stray away from their original concept of creative writing and have conformed to the Hollywood pressures of fitting a sc ...

Revenge In Hamlet
... and clearly asks him to get revenge for his untimely murder. The ghost speaks to Hamlet about his father and says, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murderer”(1.5. 31). Although Hamlet has little doubt that the ghost is not his father’s, he must still prove to himself that Claudius is in fact the murderer before he attempts to kill him. Hamlet decides to have the players act out what the ghost has told him and see Claudius’ reaction. When the play “The Mouse Trap” is performed, Claudius is shocked by the play and storms out, which is the reaction of guilt that Hamlet had hoped for. The play is named “The Mouse Trap& ...
