Death Penalty
... this decision was that the was "cruel and unusual punishment" under the Eighth Amendment. The decision was reversed when new methods of execution were introduced. Capital punishment is a difficult issue and there are as many different opinions as there are people. In our project, both sides have been presented and argued fully. Different forms of the are more humane than others. In the 1920's people decided that lethal gas, or the gas chamber, was more humane than death by electrocution. Nevada was the first state to adopt the gas chamber as their form of execution. The "Humane Death Bill" was passed abolishing all other forms of execution (Hanging or firing squ ...

Is Perception Reality?
... I believed that they were limited in not being able to break the law. Additionally, I assumed they had virtually no contact with the outside world. I completed some training in self-defense, first aid, conflict resolution, Radio Communications, etc. I was then sent to Cell Block 6 AKA Death Row. This is where my perceptions began to give way to reality. I found that almost every inmate (as called by officers and staff) had a Television and that free cable was provided with many movie channels available. Most had stereos with many CD’s. They were required however, to wear headphones while listening to their music. I was surprised to find that the law mandated m ...

Advocating The Death Penalty
... so rarely that it isn’t nearly as effective as it could be. In order for it to work, we must put it into practice more often. In recent years, crime in America has been on the rise, in particular, violent crime. This has led not only to an overcrowding of prisons in our country, but also to an increase in the number of death sentences handed down by the courts. Despite the fact that the number of inmates on death row is climbing, the number of death sentences actually carried out in any given year lags far behind. People simply aren’t fearful of the death penalty when it isn’t used the way it should be (Stewart 50). If the death penalty has been declared legal, then ...

Humanism And The Renaissance
... in things classical or ancient Greek and Roman encompassed geographic areas spanning from Italy to northern Europe. This movement became known as the Renaissance. The Renaissance incorporated ideas from the past with renewed passions in science, history, poetry, languages, and, most importantly, religion. Mirroring the ideas and theories of this era, new definitions of humanism were formulated during the Renaissance.
Giovanni Pico della Mirandola typified the mindset of the fifteenth century humanist. As one of the most brilliant scholars of his time, Pico della Mirandola was proficient in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, and Chaldee. This knowledge of languag ...

POPULATION REDISTRIBUTION
... the Treaty of Lausanne. The two rival nations agreed to expel 150,000 Greeks living in Turkey, and 388,000 Turks living in Greece back to their ethnic homelands. Except in Cyprus where the populations remained mixed. Turkey and Greece have not taken up arms against each other again. After World War II eight million people of German ethnicity were expelled from their native communities in Poland and throughout Eastern Europe, due to agreements made by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference. Hundreds of thousands of Germans died or were killed during the transfer due to the brutal manner in which it was carried out. Due to the lack of diversity and conflicting cultur ...

Teen Smoking
... Obviously I am a smoker. I am 17 years old and I am a smoker. In the late 1990’s, the statistics showed that approximately 25% of teens smoke. That’s one out of every four teenagers. High school is a tough time for teens. These years are critical to a teens future. This explains why a vast majority of smokers start at 16 years or younger with the most common age being 14 years old(freshman). It has also been proven also that teens who score lower in school smoke more than higher scoring students do. It seems that everyone smokes in our school. Our school is overrun with smokers. It is right now at least 50% smokers and 65% if you count the people who will smoke bef ...

Anorexia
... try to fool you into thinking that if you buy their product you'll become like that girl, you'll be sexy, and skinny. Ads also show businesswomen as skinny and sexy. That makes a person reading that think that they have to be skinny in order to be successful. I think it's fair to say that most teenage girls think they have to be skinny to be beautiful. I know how that feels. All through out high school I had a bad eating problem. I wasn't over weight at all, but I thought I was because I didn't look exactly like one of those girls in the magazine ads. I had three-month periods. For three months I would eat 200-300 calories a day, and run over 3 miles, plus more exe ...

Charles Darwin And Imperialism
... Darwin. In his two most famous works, The
Origin of Species and The Decent of Man, Darwin introduces the concept of "the
survival of the fittest" and "natural selection".
The Darwinian ideas introduced into English society justified a great
number of political policies and social movements. England at the turn of the
century was still a largest power in the international system. The English
perceived, through the justification of Darwinism, they were fit to be the
imperial hegemon in the world. The issue this essay will deal with is
Imperialism and how Darwinism justified its practice. Darwin argued in his work,
The Decent of Man, "When civilised nati ...

... letter "B" lesson on 3/7. Robert has shown that he enjoys Tyler's company in Lindsey's nursery rhyme lesson on 3/14. In Katie's lesson on 3/14 Robert shows that he also enjoys Justin's presence as they danced together. On 3/14 Robert also shows that he likes parallel play when he says no to Kate when she asked him if she could play blocks with him. Robert only speaks to the teachers when he is asked a question or when he asks a question. He doesn't tend to seek approval from the teachers or his peers. Overall he seems to have developed socially in many ways. A typical four year old has also developed emotionally in many ways. Four year olds have a sense of humor ...

Propaganda In Elections
... Bill
Clinton eats at Mc Donald's and read a variety of spy novels. Bob Dole presents
himself as the "all American boy" from the Heartland. In this two examples the
plain folk device is at work.
When either presidential candidates agitates the public's fear of
immigration, taxes, or crime and voting for him will reduce the threat he is
using the Fear Appeal. By playing on the public's deep-seated fears,
practitioners of this technique hopes to redirect the merits of a proposal and
towards steps that can be taken to reduce the fear.
Propaganda has had a tremendously powerful role in the history of the
world and in our own development. It has stirred both men and wo ...
