Marijuana
... This change in
law would greatly improve the quality of life for many people. Victims of
glaucoma and those needing antinausea treatment, for example, would find
marijuana easily available. If the madical advantages that are claimed for
marijuana are real, many more patients would benifit. Another good thing is
that the doctors could get on with investigating marijuanas medical uses
with out fear of controversy. The last reason is the Fedral government
would benifit two ways, First the fedral revenues would increase, because
marijuana ciggaretes would be taxed at the point of sale. The companies
that make the ciggaretes would also pay income taxes. Secon ...

Crime And Gangs In America
... They even had the final insult heaped upon them from their owners and even the clergy who suggested they were genetically inferior. But American slaves were better mannered, more civil, and less inclined to commit a crime than their white owners. They were, on the whole, by most historical accounts, a very civil, obedient and law abiding people. They were better citizens than their educated, well-fed owners. Why? Some may say fear. Fear of Massah? Or maybe, the slave owners? Perhaps to a degree. Fear certainly is a motivator.
I do not think the average American criminal is much afraid of the law or society, today. Society is not their master. So I ...

Marijuana
... were what they used it for: the control of
muscle spasms, reduction of pain, and for indegestion. Imagine that if they
still practiced this, instead of taking an Alka Seltzer after you had mom's
Chili or Tacos, you might be sitting in the living room on the LAY-Z Boy,
smoking a joint or however they would take it. The folk medicine of Africa and
Asia have used it as an herbal preparation. A "mythical" and "legendary"
pharmacist and emperor Shen Nung thought using it as a seditive was all right.
In 2,700 B.C. that same "mythical" emperor said it helped female weakness, gout,
rheumatism, malaria, beri-beri (?), contipation, and absentmindedness.
In 1979 (A.D.) C ...

A Comparison Of Male Juvenile Sex Offenders With Delinquent Non-Offenders
... offenses , and 14% of all aggravated assaults (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1987).
In Harris County alone, over 34,000 youths are referred to the courts (Harris County Juvenile Probation Department,1994). This is not only a nation wide problem, it is obviously a major problem in Harris County as well. There has been a steady increase in juvenile referrals since 1991 (Harris County Juvenile Probation Department,1993). Of these referrals, over 200 are sexual assaults (Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, 1993). It is increasingly becoming a major problem and could possibly have profound effects in the near future. Though this is not a great numbe ...

Prohibition...A Waste?
... spreading.” (Cohms 1) Prohibition was seen as
the work of the devil through alcohol, so it was up to the women to save us.
“The extraordinary “Women’s War” broke out across the nation in 1873.
Thousands of women marched from church meetings to saloons, where with
prayer and song they demanded—with transitory results—that saloonkeepers
give up their businesses. By 1900, millions of men and women were beginning
to share this hostility toward the saloon and to regard it as the most
dangerous social institution then threatening the family. The Anti-Saloon
League of America (ASL), organized in Ohio, effectively marshaled such
people into political action. State chapter ...

Gun Control
... gun control violates the right of the people given in the second amendment the right "to bear arms". Opponents of gun control, including the National Rifle Association, better known as the NRA, argue that the "right To bear arms" is guaranteed in the second amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America and licensing restrictions penalize law-abiding citizens while in no way preventing criminal use of handguns. It is also argued that by making it difficult for guns to be bought and registered for the American public there is a threat to the personal safety of American families everywhere.
However controlling the sale and distribution of firearms i ...

Euthanasia And The Robert Latimer Case
... euthanasia, it can never
be proven whether or not Latimer killed his young daughter Tracy to ‘save' her,
or to save himself. While I have never experienced living with someone who is
severely disabled, I have had the chance to discuss the issue with many friends
and associates. From what I have learned, it is, indeed, an extremely tough
matter to deal with. While no-one I have spoken to has been suicidal over the
matter, they have seen the true pain and misery that some severely disabled
individuals are forced to deal with every day of their lives. Still, many agree
with myself on the point that a human life is just that, a human life; and that
everyone alive has ...

Gender Effects On Criminal Sentencing
... research is a vital part to finding where the problems
are. Criminal sentencing is a large and pivotal part of the American legal
system, and, although equality in all aspects of a criminal trial is the
central ideal, research shows that the system falls short of this.
Nagel and Weitzman (1972) summarized research by various
investigators. When data was compiled on criminal cases, a clear
discrimination was found in favor of women. It was found that women were
awarded lesser sentences than their male counterparts for the same crimes;
these differences were found for both larceny and felony cases. The
leniency given to women was found to be similar to that of m ...

Asian Organized Crime
... many years, as far back as the early 1600’s. The Japanese Yakuza is an all-male society. These individuals are misogynists. The only visible woman in the group is the bosses wife, referred to as the ane-san (older sister). However, despite attaining the same respect as the boss, she does not get involved in the day-to-day happenings of the group. Some of the reasons for the banning of women include that there is a strong belief that woman are weak in that they were not born to fight. To a Yakuza member, the most substantial trait is courage, in that these members must be willing to die for their boss, and women, it is believed, do not possess this trait. Ad ...
