amidst the enemy's first charge, yet fear consumes him when they charge a
second time. "He, too, threw down his gun and fled" (69). After Henry runs,
he begins to feel the guilt that plagues him; in addition, other soldiers
magnify his guilt. The tattered soldier asks him, "Where yeh hit ol' boy"
(89)? Instead of answering the question, Henry leaves the tattered soldier
and refuses to admit his feelings of guilt. Throughout the rest of the
