After Lenin’s death in 1924, there was a struggle between Joseph Stalin and Trotsky for leadership of the Communist party (“Animal”). There was the same struggle between Snowball, who was much like Trotsky, and Napoleon, the pig who was much like Stalin, in the novel. It was always made a point to use Snowball as a scapegoat for Napoleon leading up the animals running him off the farm.
