Middle of essay ....n slavery. Jefferson did not only own slaves, but had relations with them. He stated that all men were created equal, but in some way was able to allow himself to believe that people of color were not men. He allowed himself to believe not only that they were below whites, but below the human race as a whole. He stated that they were somewhere in between humans and apes.
