Born December 15, 1911 in Wichita, Kansas, Stanley Newcomb Kenton grew up in Los Angeles, California. Sometime around the age of 8, his mother, Stella, a traditionally-trained musician noticed her son's irrepressible aptitude for the piano and became his first teacher.

His early piano voicings, slightly reminiscent of ones used by the great percussion pianist, Earl 'Fatha' Hines, gradually found their own distinctive style when he reshaped his chord patterns and began adding augmented and diminished 5ths, 9ths, 11ths and 13ths, which in no time began showing up in his arrangements.
