factors lead to the greatness of . First, the Roman
Legionaries were very well trained and disciplined. Next, they weren't as
tough on the cities they conquered as many other forces were. Finally, the
Legions setup well-designed fortresses or march ....

towers, etc. to gain an advantage on approaching enemies. Although the
marching camps were very complex and well designed, the fortresses were
much larger and more elaborate. They were about ten times the size of the
marching camps, 50 to 60 acres in size. Originally, the forts were made of
timber, but after the turn of the second century, the emperor Trajan
ordered them to be replaced with stone structures for better protection.
