Heartlessness also arose from his obsession with physical dominance. When his wife and mother died on the same day, he only wrote a journal entry expressing his remorse. After that day he never showed his sadness or loneliness. Roosevelt gave his daughter to his brother to rear, while he headed west to become a cowboy.
