"Things sure aren't what they use to be," said my grandfather. He should know considering he was born March 3, 1930. Son of Robert and Clara Long, Robert Long was born in Richmond, Kentucky and lived most of his childhood there. He was the fifth child of six, and the third son of the children. ....

Starting school when he was around seven, Robert attended a school named Bethal Elementary School. This school was heated by coal, and Robert recalls a time that his brothers were picked to go get the coal from the coal shed. The coal was kept in a shed to keep the snow from getting on it.
