....ning in 1798, Beethoven experienced a continual humming in his ears that was gradually growing stronger. He eventually realized that he was going deaf. He began to drop into a depression, and in 1802 he almost committed suicide. However, after being secluded for some time, he made a new effort towards his music. The next ten years brought forth masterpiece after masterpiece. One of his best known symphonies, Symphony No. 5, was written soon thereafter.
