Beginning of essay
In Hugo's novel , Hugo shows us the underlying theme through
many different symbols and quotations. For instance, when Jean Valjean stays
the night with the bishop Monseigneur Myriel, Valjean steals the bishop's
silver. The police catch him and bring him back to the bishop. The bishop
hands him ....
Middle of essay ....ne last time. Instead of following his
instincts and avoiding thinking by arresting him, he slowly walks away with
a thought that morally he should let Valjean go. A new idea forced its way
into his consciousness. There is a higher law than the judicial law. A man
can be an outlaw and still be virtuous he decides, against the code of law.
