It is read quickly, and then there is nothing. He repeats the process with, "the desert a kind of form." Both lines are incomplete sentences alone. They are quick flashes of an image which disappears as quickly as it came. The next idea forces readers to pick up the pace a bit because of it's larger length and the pause comes later.
