Necrotizing Fasciitis/Myosits (Flesh Eating Disease)
... three centimetres per
hour. Death can occur in just 18 hours.
The layers of tissue that surround the muscle are called fascia.
When the disease spreads along the layers of tissue that surround muscle,
it is called Necrotizing Fasciitis. Once the disease spreads into the
muscle tissue, it is called Necrotizing Myositis.
Background
The first record of the disease was in France in 1783. The disease
occurred throughout the 1800's and 1900's, but was usually only found in
military hospitals in times of war. Some outbreaks have occurred also in
civilian populations. There seemed to be some decrease in the 1940's, and
then another outbreak in the 1980' ...

Euthanasia
... the light of the world brighter. The world needs everyone's power and contribution. It's the power and energy of the elderly, and the strength and will of the ill, that give the world life. The light has become very dim with the crime and corruption in today's world, we can't afford to throw lives away because some think they're meaningless. If we continue to accept the merciless killings and suicides of the helpless but powerful, the light will soon burn out. There will be no energy in the world. and doctor-assisted suicide should not be accepted or allowed by the government and people of the United States.
Statistics show that seventy-three percent of the U.S ...

The Effects Of Smoking
... may occur in people aged in their thirties, if they have
been smoking for 15 - 20 years. The influence of smoking on heart disease
is much greater at younger ages. In smokers between 35 - 44 years of age,
73% of deaths from coronary heart disease are due to smoking. By ages 75 -
84 years, the proportion of CHD deaths due to smoking in current smokers
falls to 14%. Even smoking one cigarette causes a wide range of
physiological reactions. The carbon monoxide inhaled when a cigarette is
lit has a number of toxic effects on the body. The first is the impairment
of oxygen transportation in the blood. This impairs muscular performance,
and may also affect the vision, ...

Huntington's Disease
... for 10 to 20 years until the
patient dies. No treatment yet exists for this disease. However, in 1983 a U.S.
research team announced the discovery of an identifiable segment of DNA that
can be used as an indicator of the presence of the gene causing the disease. In
March 1993, the journal Cell announced that the Huntington's Disease
Collaborative Research Group had discovered the gene behind the disease. This
was a major breakthrough in the effort to understand and eventually work toward
a treatment of the disorder.
Our group has decided to have the child. We have a steady income of
$52,000 and are insured through our employers. Our counselor said that it was ...

Euthanasia: The Right To Die
... with.
"A dying man needs to die, as a sleepy man needs to
sleep, and there comes a time when it is wrong, as well
as useless to resist."
-Steward Alsop, Stay of Execution
Euthanasia has become an issue of increasing attention because of Dr. Jack Kevorkian's assisted suicides. As of October 21 Kevorkian has assisted in nineteen suicides. Because of the increasing number of suicides in Michigan, Gov. Engler signed an anti-suicide law in late February that made doctor-assisted suicides a felony. During the 21-month trial period of the new law anyone assisting in a suicide can be sentenced to up to four years in prison and fined more than $2,000 (Reuters, 1993). ...

Biologic Nutrition And Nutrients
... on any nutritious foods. The only exceptions are foods that cause allergies, which should be given up completely.
Although there is no general formula to determine individual vitamin requirements, there is the recognition that vitamins play a role in preventing disease and maintaining health. Vitamins do not contain calories and do not supply energy. In other words, they do not contribute to weight gain. They are, however, most important as constituents of enzymes, those organic catalysts which enable biological processes to take place.
It is totally impossible to imagine life without vitamins and enzymes. Through enzymes, vitamins stimulate metabolic ...

Alzheimer's Disease
... as to
how it is born. Initially when we study the brain of a Alzheimer's victim, we
focus on two specific areas. One is the cortex of the frontal and cerebral
lobes1. The second is the hippocampus (meaning seahorses in Greek which it
resembles2) which is located below the cerebral cortex and responsible for
short-term memory. If we study samples of these two section, we would find three
irregularities which are not found in normal brain matter. These three are
called neurofibrillary tangles, neuritic plagues and granulovacuolar
degeneration3.
A nerve cell has numerous axons and dendrites coming out of it. A
neurofibrillary tangle is when the neuron changes. A ...

Surrogate Mothers
... But have those who preach this anti-surrogate moralism ever experienced what
it would be like to be those on the other side of this issue? Suppose, for a
moment, that they were the ones who were incapable of having children. Would
they condemn themselves the way that they condemn others if they were in another
predicament? It is surely easy to say what one would do in any situation, but
one can never know exactly what they would do until that situation comes.
How many of you have ever held a small child in your arms and looked into its
small eyes and felt the love that you had for it. Perhaps it was a younger
sibling, perhaps even a child of your own. You ...

lifelong immunity. The mumps virus is spread by contact of another person's
discharge from the nose or mouth. The virus is present in these discharges from
six days before symptoms to nine days after the glands begin to swell. The virus
will then incubate for two to three weeks before symptoms appear.
Symptoms include headaches, jaw being painful and tender to the touch,
fever, and difficulty swallowing. The swelling usually disappears after seven
to ten days. Some complications includedeafness (usually only in one ear),

The Dangers Of Smoking
... In the United States there have been a reported 10 million deaths attributed to smoking. And of those 10 million people, 2 million died of lung cancer. These numbers are way too high especially for a supposedly educated society such as ours.
Two other dangers that relate to this habit are passive smoking and underage smokers. Since 1964 there have been an estimated 3000 deaths caused by second hand smoke. This is kind of scary to me, considering how many firends that I hang out with that smoke. Another problem is that young people start smoking cigarettes way too early. Around 80% of adult smokers said that they started to smoke sometime before their 18 b ...
